ELEVATION: 7500' LOCATION: 29 miles south of Grand Junction SEASON: 15 May - 15 Oct (Campground is open year round, May - Oct is the recommended time frame because of weather and road conditions) CAMP SITES: 9 family sites (well shaded) and 1 large group site CAMPING FEES: None RESERVATIONS: N/A, first come - first serve FACILITIES: Tables, grills, toilets (handicap accessible) MAXIMUM LENGTH OF STAY: 14 Days DRINKING/STREAM WATER: No fresh drinking water available. Big Dominguez Creek runs year round and flows through the campground, but the water will need to be filtered. Plan to pack in 1 gallon per person, per day. DIRECTIONS: From Grand Junction, head south on Hwy 50 to Whitewater. At Whitewater make a right turn on to Hwy 141. Travel 11.5 miles to the Divide Road turn off (Uncompahgre National Forest Access Road) on your left. The road winds and switchbacks to the top of the mountain. At the top stay on the main road until you come to a fork in the road. At the fork, follow the signs to Dominguez Conservation Area (left). In approximately 5 miles the Big Dominguez Campground will be on your right. CAUTION: Road becomes extremely hazardous in wet conditions. Watch for rock slides on last 2 miles of road leading to campground. We DO NOT recommend taking RVs or travel trailers to the campground.
Physical Characteristics: Big Dominguez Campground is nestled among ponderosa pine, cottonwood trees and willows, next to the Dominguez Canyon Wilderness and the Uncompahgre National Forest. Beautiful red canyon country surrounds you with opportunities for hiking and horseback riding. Big Dominguez Creek runs through the campground year round and is very popular for fishing. The area provides valuable wildlife habitat for desert bighorn sheep, deer, elk, mountain lion, black bear, wild turkey and chukar. Off-highway vehicles and mountain bikes are NOT allowed in the adjoining wilderness study area, however, there are areas nearby that are open to such activities. |
