LOCATION: 70 miles southwest of Grand Junction
LENGTH OF TRIP: 30 miles (Permit required from State Line Rapid to Dewey Bridge, contact the Moab, Utah BLM office 435-259-7012 to obtain your permit)
CLASS: II & III, drops 18' per mile. State Line Rapid is Class IV and should be scouted or portaged.
APPROXIMATE TIME TO COMPLETE: 2 - 3 days
SHUTTLE TIME: 3 - 3-1/2 hours
SEASON: April - June
DRINKING WATER: None. Plan to pack in 1 gallon per person, per day.
NOTE: The Grand Junction Field Office manages just a small section of the Dolores River, from Gateway to State Line Rapid. State Line Rapid - Dewey Bridge is managed by the Moab BLM office and a permit is required to float this section of the river. To obtain a permit for State Line Rapid - Dewey Bridge contact the Moab BLM office at (435) 259-7012. For information on the Slickrock to Bedrock section of the Dolores River contact the Uncompaghre Resource Area Office (CO) at (970) 240-5300.
DIRECTIONS TO GATEWAY PUT-IN: From Grand Junction go south on Hwy 50 to Whitewater, turn right on to Hwy 141, travel 45 miles to Gateway. Put-in is upstream from the Hwy 141 bridge near Gateway.
DIRECTIONS TO DEWEY BRIDGE TAKE-OUT: From Gateway take Hwy 141 east to Hwy 50. Take Hwy 50 north to east bound Hwy 141 (32 Rd) this will take you through the town of Clifton. Stay on Hwy 141 until it meets up with Hwy 6 (Business Loop 70). Stay on Hwy 6 until it intersects with I-70. Get on I-70 west bound into Utah. Take the East Cisco exit (#212) and follow the county road south and west of I-70 until it meets UT Hwy 128. Take Hwy 128 south to the Dewey Bridge parking area and boat ramp.
STREAMFLOW: Along this section of river you will encounter Class II and III rapids, with State Line Rapid being a class IV and should be scouted or portaged. A very short season of raftable water limits the use on this section of river.
REMINDER: Port-a-potties are required on all overnight trips. Firepans must be used for all campfires. Gas or propane stoves are strongly encouraged for camp cooking.
