Gaming Pieces

Photograph of Gaming PiecesSets of small bone tabs and discs of bone, shell, or ceramic, with surfaces polished smooth by handling, are occasionally found in Puebloan archaeological sites. Often the bone and shell pieces have incised designs on their surfaces. The ceramic pieces are vessel fragments (sherds) which have been re-shaped.

Such pieces appear to have been used as markers in games, possibly games related to divination or gambling, but their true purpose is unknown.
