Gold Belt Tour Scenic and Historic Byway

Cliff face

The Gold Belt Tour Scenic and Historic Byway runs through Gold Belt Recreation Area; major routes include High Park Road, Phantom Canyon Road and Shelf Road. Visitors will travel along a historic narrow-gauge railroad bed and an old stage road. These retrace the routes that once ran between the mining locations of Cripple Creek, Florence and Victor National Historic Mining District, site of the world's largest gold rush. The Byway also accesses Garden Park Fossil Area, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument and Indian Springs Trace Fossil Site. Four-wheel drive is an exciting way to explore the Gold Belt Tour, and travelers can take a break along Shelf Road at Banks Campground or Sand Gulch Campground. In addition, avid climbers will enjoy the world-renowned Shelf Road Rock Climbing Area.
