Recreation Activities

Hunters in the snow

Diverse landscapes throughout the state provide opportunities to pursue large game like elk and mule deer, small game and even waterfowl. Hunters can enjoy Colorado's natural areas while challenging and fine-tuning their skills for increased precision.

While hunting on BLM lands, it is necessary to observe all associated regulations for the purpose of preserving wildlife populations and ensuring public safety:

  • Hunters may only shoot animals for which they personally hold a license.
  • Hunters must wear at least 500 square inches of solid daylight fluorescent orange above the waist.
  • It is a felony to kill and abandon game, to sell or purchase big game or to provide outfitting services without the required registration.
  • It is illegal to shoot within 50 feet of a public road, to shoot from any type of vehicle or to interfere with hunters  or prey.

Various other regulations also apply. For additional information, contact the local BLM Field Office for the area you are planning to visit.
