Science of Hydraulic Fracturing

Natural Gas Operations from a Public Health Perspective by Theo Colborn, Carol Kwiatkowski, Kim Schultz & Mary Bachran - This article looks at the health effects of the various chemicals used in the Fracking process.

Human health risk assessment of air emissions from development of unconventional natural gas resources by Lisa M. McKenzie, Roxana Z. Witter, Lee S. Newman, John L. Adgate - The authors looked at cancer risks during well development and well completion phases of natural gas development, comparing residential proximity and potential risk.

Evaluation of Impacts to Underground Sources of Drinking Water by Hydraulic Fracturing of Coalbed Methane Reservoirs Study (2004) by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency – The EPA did not find confirmed evidence that drinking water wells have been contaminated by hydraulic fracturing fluid injection into Coal Bed Methane (CBM) wells. The EPA reviewed studies and follow-up investigations conducted by state agencies in response to citizen reports that CBM production resulted in water quality and quantity incidents.
EPA AIRNow Mobile App – location specific reports on current air quality and air quality forecasts for ozone and fine particle pollutant (PM 2.5). Maps provide visual depictions of current and forecast air quality nationwide. A page on air-quality related health effects explains what actions people can take to protect their health at different AQI levels.

Injection Wells: An introduction to their use, operation and regulation by the Ground Water Protection Council - Ever wonder what injection wells are, how they work, and what regulates them? If so, this guide is a good read.

A guide to practical management of produced water from onshore oil and gas operations in the United States. Prepared by the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission and ALL Consulting for the U.S. Department of Energy, National Petroleum Office - By volume, water production represents approximately 98 percent of the non-energy related fluids produced from oil and gas operations, yielding approximately 14 billion barrels of water annually (Veil, 2004). This Guidebook was designed for by operators during the planning phase for determining produced water management options.

Other National Resources
Environmental Protection Agency Hydraulic Fracturing – The following website covers EPA’s scientific understanding of fracking, regulatory clarity and protection against known risks, assuring compliance and promoting transparency.

Halliburton Colorado Fluids Disclosure - A site provide by Halliburton listing the fluids used in Colorado during the hydraulic fracking process.

FracFocus - The hydraulic fracturing chemical registry website, where you can search for information about the chemicals used in the hydraulic fracturing of oil and gas wells.
