U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIORBUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT
|Red Cloud Peak|
The Red Cloud Peak WSA contains 30 mountain peaks over 13,000 feet in elevation and two peaks over 14,000 feet: Red Cloud Peak (14,034 feet) and Sunshine Peak (14,001 feet). In the upper portion of the drainages, the mountainous terrain, with its expanses of alpine tundra and open scenic vistas, projects feelings of vastness and solitude.
Lower elevations are often heavily forested and create a feeling of total seclusion. Volcanic and Precambrian rock types are intermingled and glacial geomorphology is highly evident. There are also several rock glacier formations, alpine lakes, and streams in this WSA.
Location: The Red Cloud Peak WSA is located in Hinsdale County, from one to 10 miles west of Lake City. The area is bounded on the north by a county road and private land along Henson Creek, and on the east by the Round Top Mountain Road and private land near Lake San Cristobal.
Flora & Fauna: Vegetation consists mainly of spruce-fir, alpine grasses, sedges, forbs, and a small willow species. Fauna includes mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, cutthroat trout, and the Uncompahgre Peak Fritillary butterfly.
Recreation: Activities include hiking, backpacking, camping, mountain climbing, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, and photography. For more information, visit the Recreation page. Please note that though unconfined recreation is encouraged in WSAs, specific types of recreation may be barred from a specific area to prevent degradation of natural conditions.
