North Sand Hills

North Sand Hills WSA/ISA (Photo by -- Please note that this photo was taken within the North Sand Hills Special Recreation Management Area [SRMA] and the North Sand Hills WSA is located within the SRMA.)The North Sand Hills ISA (Instant Study Area) represents a Cold Climate Eolian sand deposit, which comprises three active dune areas in Colorado. The morphology here consists of two large, active parabolic dunes with small, internal dunes migrating up the windward slopes. Several archaeological sites have been discovered, increasing the historical and cultural values of the area.

This ISA is also a part of a 1,400-acre North Sand Hills Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA). The North Sand Hills SRMA is the only OHV sand recreation area in the state. A 13-site developed campground was built in 2010 to enhance camping opportunities while protecting resources. The SRMA is a non-fee, primitive OHV recreation and camping area with 300 acres of dunes.
