The Dominguez Canyon WSA is a collection of small acreages that is adjacent to the Dominguez Canyon Wilderness. The unusual shape and size of this WSA is due to congressional designation of adjacent lands as wilderness.
The WSA is characterized by two deeply-dissected, major canyon systems - the Big Dominguez and the Little Dominguez - draining northeast off the Uncompahgre Plateau into the Gunnison River. Little Dominguez Canyon is the longer of the two, at approximately 20 miles in length. It joins the larger Big Dominguez Canyon a little over a mile before their confluence with the Gunnison River. The drainage patterns have contributed to the formation of isolated northeast-southwest-trending mesas.
There is also evidence of thousands of years of Native American use for hunting, shelter, and as a travel corridor from the Gunnison River Valley to the Uncompahgre Plateau.
