Abstract:

This data set consists of digital data describing BLM's Resource Area Boundaries, also known as BLM Field Office Areas. These data were derived from BLM Field Office data captured at 1:24,000. Data were then mapjoined into a resulting statewide coverage. The coverage model was converted to a geodatabase. Because of differences between data capture techniques between BLM Offices the data editor droped some boundaries from various Field Office Areas to avoid sliver problems. These differences will be identified in the line attribute table within this geodatabase feature class. See "Entity and Attribute Information" section for line source.

Purpose:

To illustrate BLM's Resource Area boundaries in a digital form for Resource Management Planning.

No restictions, although comparison with other data sets for the same area from other time periods may be inaccurate due to inconsistencies resulting from changes in photointerpretation, rounding of decimal coordinates during conversion, and mapping conventions over time.

The attributes were checked against the source map for accuracy. Polygons are attributed with full BLM Resource/Field Area Name.

Logical_Consistency_Report:

Original data was Polygon and chain-node topology present. The coverage was checked with an aml which detects over/undershoots. All lines intersect only where intended. Polygons intersecting the neatline are closed along the border. Data were converted to a geodatabase with Topology Rules, Validation of rules was performed and all errors were corrected.

Completeness_Report:

This theme covers all of the state of Colorado. All Resource Area boundaries were captured from the source graphic. Data completeness for unrevised digital files reflects the content of the source graphic. Attribute classification complete to BLM Standards.

Referenced to USGS base map; does not register perfectly, however, because data were digitized off of paper quadrangle. In the case of the boundary between Saguache and La Jara this arc were digitized using the 1:500,000 boundary as reference and a 1:24,000 scale DRG as backdrop. Data were adjusted to DRG backdrop features i.e.; Ridge Lines, Section Lines, Roads, etc.

BLM Field Office Boundaries collected in Field following attribute and data collection standards in each Field Office. Data sets were sent to BLM Colorado State Office GIS staff for map join into statewide data theme representing current BLM Field Office Boundaries.

Data mapjoined by BLM Colorado State Office GIS Specialist for a resulting Statewide BLM Field Office Coverage. GIS Specialist (editor) noticed sliver areas between BLM Field Offices to the North and South of Grand Junction Field Office. The same was true for areas North, South, and to the East of the Glenwood Field Office Area. For this reason the GIS Specialist (editor) decided to retain only the boundaries runniing primarily from South to North that make up Glenwood and Grand Junction Field Office Areas. Attribute Fields were created in the Arc Attribute Table to document the source for the line work.

Addition of La Jara and Saguache BLM Field Areas. A new boundary was added in the southern part of the State of Colorado to delineate the two new BLM Field Areas. Boundary references National Atlas Coverage but captured by heads up digitizing using features from 1:24,000 scale DRG.

Addition of Dolores, Columbine and Pagosa Springs BLM Field Office Areas. The area formally known as the BLM San Juan Resource Area has now been broken down to the three Field Office Areas mentioned above. Additionally a new boundary was added to the former BLM La Jara Field Office Area to make a new area called Del Norte Field Office Area. The line work came from the field and looks to be digitized and/or referenced to USGS 24K Topo maps. It is unclear at this time how accurate the data is in these areas and it is also unknown who compiled these data boundaries. At this time the data has to be considered Draft.

Attribute field "Name" was added to the polygon attribute field to indicate what BLM Center the BLM Field Office belongs to. An "Acres" field was also added to the polygon attribute table to calculate acres from the area field which is in meters.

Two new ArcInfo Feature types were added to this coverage. They are both annotation feature classes, "annotation.label" plots the BLM Field Office Names and "annotation.name" plots the BLM Center Names.

Attribute field names "Description" and "Linetype" were added the arc attribute table. Description is the place holder for the data source of the line work. Linetype: tells the user of the data what kind of line/boundary the data is, i.e,: BLM Center Boundary, State Boundary. The "Linetype" field is useful for cartographic display of the linework when applying symbology to the different line types.

Lastley: Some work was done along the northern boundary of Grand Junction, and Glenwood Springs Field Areas. Boundary adjustment came through a update process at the BLM State Office and follows records and logic applied at the State Office (ed. Andy Senti)
