THE NEED FOR A SURVEY IS DETERMINED

An official survey is required for land actions involving public or Indian lands. the Land Ordinance of May 20, 1785, requires survey of lands prior to disposal by the U.S. Government.

Surveys are sometimes necessary for proper management of certain land actions. They are helpful in:

  • Delineating areas of Federal lands where, by law, stipulation on uses are limited (example: wilderness boundaries)
  • Preventing and detecting trespass
  • Defining lease boundaries
  • Definfing resource boundaries (example:Timber Sales)
