Blacks Gulch is the best fossil vertebrate locality in Colorado from the Lysite Age (middle-early Eocene) . It has produced several hundred good mammal fossils including Lophiparamys debequensis. This site also contains Lysitean fauna. Possibly the best known speicimen of Cantius abditus (primate) upper jaw was collected under BLM permit from this site. Blacks Gulch is also a Colorado Natural Area under Colorado Parks and Wildlfe.
