Colorado's ACECs

Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) are designated to protect areas of sensitive and significant environmental significance, and to provide the American public with the opportunity to view nature in its natural setting. Such areas within the Program contain some of state's most diverse natural communities. Such areas include sites of rare plant and animal species habitats, recreational opportunities from everything from hiking to rafting, unusual geologic features, cultural sites, and fossil localities. Being of a sensitive/critical nature many areas are managed to better protect these units natural values, and for others sites contain natural hazards that could prove dangerous to the general public. We encourage visitation as both an opportunity to relax within nature and as a learning experience, but please take care and exercise caution while enjoying the scenic wonders of these areas.
