Christmas Tree Permits For Sale (11-16-12) |

Monte Vista, Colo. - Christmas tree cutting permits are once again for sale at all the Rio Grande National Forest and Bureau of Land Management offices in the San Luis Valley. The permits cost $8.00 each with a limit of five permits per household. Trees must be growing on land managed by the Rio Grande National Forest or the BLM’s San Luis Valley Field Office. All trees must be at least 100 feet away from any campground, picnic area or road and can be up to five inches in diameter at shoulder height. Cutting trees within designated wilderness areas or the Conejos Canyon is prohibited. In addition to the public lands offices, Christmas tree permits will also be available at the Silver Thread Information Center in South Fork; the Green Spot Garden Center and Antiques, and the Bervig’s True Value in Alamosa; and the Hometown Food Market in Antonito. The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year 2012, activities on public lands generated $4.6 billion in revenue, much of which was shared with the States where the activities occurred.
