Shelf Road National Public Lands Day BLM volunteer opportunity (09-27-10)

Canon City, Colo. – The Bureau of Land Management Royal Gorge Field Office and the Rocky Mountain Field Institute are looking for volunteers to help with a National Public Lands Day project; Shelf Road Volunteer Weekend scheduled for Oct. 9 and 10.  This is an annual fall project made possible through a partnership with the Rocky Mountain Field Institute and the Access Fund’s Adopt-A-Crag.
The project includes trail construction, repair, and maintenance on the trails at the Shelf Road climbing area.  Volunteers will be working with BLM and RMFI personnel to construct rock steps, retaining walls, and other structures.  This project is a great opportunity for folks who recreate in this area to participate in the maintenance and improvements of their public lands.
“National Public Lands Day celebrates service and recreation on public lands. This is the 18th anniversary for the Shelf Road volunteer weekend event and I want to personally thank all the volunteers, RMFI, and Adopt-A-Crag whose efforts over the years have made a difference in the quality of the recreational experience in this area,” commended Keith Berger, Royal Gorge Field Manager.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
