New wildfire on BLM lands northwest of Cañon City (06-21-10)



Cañon City, Colo. – A wildfire, Parkdale Canyon, was reported right before 2:00 p.m. this afternoon in the Arkansas River Corridor southeast of Parkdale, CO: about 14 miles northwest of Cañon City. There are multiple starts and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
There are 14 BLM and US Forest Service firefighters currently at the fire assisted by firefighters from the Cañon City Fire Protection District, Deer Mountain Fire Protection District, and the Tallahassee Volunteer Fire Protection District. Fremont County Sheriff’s department is also a cooperating agency on this fire. There are multiple structures in this area and the county sheriff’s department is assessing for the appropriate action at this time.
Resources ordered include: a Type 3 Incident Command Team; 1 – Type 1 (large) helicopter; 1 – Type 3 (small) helicopter; 1 – large airtanker; 1 – single engine airtanker; and 1 – fixed-winged airplane used for aerial supervision of other aircraft assigned to a fire.
Updates on the Parkdale Canyon will be provided as new information becomes available.



The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
