BLM to Conduct Noxious Weed Treatments (09-28-10)

GUNNISON, Colo. – The Bureau of Land Management Gunnison Field Office will be spraying for noxious weeds Oct. 5-6, 2010, on the upper and lower loop hiking trails along the Slate River north of Crested Butte.
“For the safety of our contractor, who is accessing the area on horseback, we ask that the public avoid these trails Oct. 5-6,” said Brian St. George, BLM Gunnison Field Office Manager.  “The trails will be open for regular non-motorized use starting on Oct. 7.”
The treatments are targeting yellow toadflax and Canada thistle.
Through cooperative efforts, BLM Colorado often focuses management on county-listed noxious weeds. Volunteers make a difference in our ability to manage weeds. For more information on volunteer opportunities visit http://www.blm.gov/co/st/en/BLM_Resources/volunteers.html.
The BLM manages more land - more than 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.

In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget.
