UPDATE ON GRAMMAR FIRE NEAR NORWOOD - 7 p.m.

Norwood, CO – The Grammar Fire burning northwest of the town of Norwood is 35% contained this afternoon after fire crews worked through the day to secure a line around its perimeter.

Officials with Montrose Interagency Fire Management Unit (MIFMU) successfully held the line built Tuesday night on the south and east flanks of the fire and were able to halt the fire’s advance towards several homes. No structures were burned.

Those evacuated from their homes in the Deer Mesa and Maverick Draw areas are being told it is safe to go back to their homes, as the threat to structures is greatly reduced.

Due to more accurate mapping, fire officials say the fire has burned 801 acres. It started in the San Miguel Canyon Tuesday afternoon and burned south through Bureau of Land Management land, threatening homes in the area.

Full containment is expected by Friday evening.

Resources on the fire today include three hotshot crews, six wildland firefighting engines and more than 10 structure protection engines from local fire departments. The structure protection engines have been demobilized this evening.

Officials say the cause of the fire was lightning. The public can call the fire information line for updates at 970-240-1070.
