BLM seeking comments on travel management plan for newly acquired land parcels

Cañon City, Colo. – The BLM Royal Gorge Field Office (RGFO) announces the release of the Garden Park and Shaws Park Acquisition Area Travel Management draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for public review and comment.  The BLM is seeking comments over a 30-day period beginning Thursday, March 12, 2009 and ending on Monday, April 13, 2009.
The two separate land parcels, located north of Cañon City in Fremont County, were recently acquired by the BLM through a land exchange with the City of Black Hawk.  Both parcels fall within the Gold Belt Travel Management Plan (TMP) Area and adjoin other public lands.  Acquisition of these lands brings essential paleontological resources into federal ownership and protection.  Consolidation of ownership also increases the area’s “core” wildlife habitat and wildlife migratory corridors.  The draft EA describes four alternatives for travel management in these parcels that are compatible with the goals and objectives established in the Gold Belt TMP.
Substantive comments regarding the alternatives will help BLM develop the final travel management plan for the area.  The draft EA is available for review at www.blm.gov/co/en/fo/rgfo/travel_mgmt/garden_pk-shaws_pk.html.  Hard copies are also available at the Royal Gorge Field Office and the public libraries in Canon City and Florence.
Written comments can be submitted by email to rgfo_comments@blm.gov or send hard copy to BLM RGFO, Attention:  Martin Weimer, 3028 E. Main St., Cañon City, CO 81212.
For further information contact either Martin Weimer at 719-269-8572 or Leah Quesenberry at 719-269-8547.
