BLM begins travel management implementation in the Upper Arkansas Valley

Cañon City, Colo. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Royal Gorge Field Office (RGFO) has begun implementation of the Arkansas River Travel Management Plan (TMP).  Current implementation efforts focus on installing route designation signs, maintaining and improving designated roads and trails, and closing user created routes with signs and barriers.

The Arkansas River TMP affects travel and related activities on approximately 250,000 acres of public lands in Chaffee, Fremont and Custer counties.  The Arkansas River TMP Record of Decision (approved in April 2008) limits all motorized and mechanized travel on BLM public lands to designated routes.  Additional travel and safety related restrictions on public lands were approved in the Arkansas River TMP.

The Arkansas River TMP and related documents are available on the Internet at http://www.blm.gov/co/st/en/fo/rgfo/travel_mgmt/arkansas_river_travel0.html.

For more information or to volunteer to assist with implementation, please call Starr Jamison, BLM Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area at 719-539-7289 or Leah Quesenberry, BLM RGFO at 719-269-8547.
