Volunteers needed for Saturday’s Old Spanish Trail clean-up

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Volunteers are needed Saturday for a clean-up of the Old Spanish Trail between Whitewater and Grand Junction.

The clean-up is sponsored by the Grand Junction Chapter of the Old Spanish Trail Association and the Bureau of Land Management. Volunteers will meet at the Whitewater Trailhead off of U.S. Highway 50 at 9 a.m. and work into the afternoon.

Volunteers should bring water, a lunch, hat, work gloves, and sunscreen, and dress for the weather.

To RSVP and receive additional information, call BLM outdoor recreation planner Ken Straley (970) 244-3031.

The Old Spanish Trail was used by traders and emigrants traveling between Sante Fe and Los Angles primarily between 1829 and 1848. The trail had several branches, one of which included the route between Whitewater and Grand Junction. The trail was designated a National Historic Trail in 2002.
