BLM’s Wolford Mountain restrictions designed to help wildlife

KREMMLING – The Bureau of Land Management is asking the public to help ensure the wildlife on Wolford Mountain make it through this tough winter.

BLM’s Kremmling Field Office implemented its annual winter travel restrictions on Wolford Mountain north of Kremmling in December to help reduce stress on wintering big game herds. While most snowmobilers and others have been staying out of the closed area, managers have documented a number of violations.

“We have these restrictions to help reduce stress to wildlife in this key wintering area,” said Kremmling Field Manager John Ruhs. “We are reminding the public to observe these restrictions and also to report any violations they see.”

Snowmobile and other human activity near wildlife in this area push the animals and force them to burn critical energy they need to get through the tough winter.

BLM is actively enforcing the restrictions and will cite violators. The affected area includes public lands between Highway 40, Grand County Road 22 (Back Troublesome Road) and Grand County Road 25 (Antelope Pass Road). The restrictions will remain in place until April 30, 2006.

Maps showing open travel routes are available at information kiosks on County Road 224 near the landfill, and County Road 26 off of Highway 40. All other travel routes and areas on BLM lands are currently closed to all motorized use.

Snowmobile use is restricted to routes marked with orange diamonds. Horse, foot, and ski travel typically will be permitted throughout the area during winter travel restrictions, but be sure to check current restrictions prior to each visit.

Winter conditions may cause the Field Manager to change or alter restrictions in the Wolford area so check often for restriction updates.

To report violations or for further information regarding the Wolford Mountain area travel restrictions, please visit or call the Kremmling Field Office, 2103 E. Park Ave., 970-724-3000.
