BLM accepting comments on Special Recreation Permits

GRAND JUNCTION, CO—The Bureau of Land Management Grand Junction Field Office is accepting public comment on four Special Recreation Permit (SRP) applications for a number of commercial activities on BLM public lands. All four of these applications are new proposals. The BLM requires SRPs for commercial operations, as well as competitive and organized group events on BLM public lands. This system allows the BLM to manage commercial recreation to ensure a sustainable, quality experience for the public.

These four SRP applications will be available for public comment from January 18 through February 20, 2006 and are available for review at 2815 H Road in Grand Junction. BLM is seeking comments regarding such issues as compliance history, potential conflicts and safety. Comments received may also assist BLM in determining whether these SRPs support Bureau recreation management objectives or provide public land users with the diverse recreational opportunities they desire.

The BLM uses a permit system for managing economic aspects of recreation as well as ensuring compliance with resource management goals and objectives. The BLM is required to collect “fair value” on behalf of the public when any of these types of activities take place on public lands. The Bureau works to support local economies by making public lands available for these activities, while managing commercial recreation to protect natural resources that make recreation on public lands possible.

For more information on the SRP applications currently available for public comment, or to find out whether or not your activity on public lands requires an SRP, contact Andy Windsor at 970-244-3044 or andy_windsor@blm.gov.
