Volunteers to focus on Lunch Loop area for National Trails Day

GRAND JUNCTION, CO—Help celebrate National Trails Day by joining the Bureau of Land Management and Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association for a day of trail maintenance in the Lunch Loop Area off Monument Rd. National Trails Day is Saturday, June 3, 2006.

“It’ll be a fun day with a little bit of hard work mixed in,” Park Ranger Chris Pipkin said. “We'll be fixing some problem spots and making improvements on some of the most popular trails right out our back door.”

REI is sponsoring the event, providing t-shirts and other goodies for the trail volunteers. Several areas have been identified as needing work, and deciding which trails are tackled will be based partly on the weather. Moisture in the soil is helpful when maintaining some trails. Volunteer turnout will also be a factor, so register now!

Get more details and register for this project at http://www.voutdoors.org. (Click on "Find Volunteer Opportunities," search “COPMOBA” and select “Bangs Canyon.”) Volunteers should dress in layers, bring work boots and gloves, a sack lunch, plenty of water, a hat and sunscreen. For more information, contact Park Ranger Chris Pipkin at 970-244-3024.
