BLM offers Mustangs and Burros for Adoption

Ft. Collins, CO - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will offer 50 mustangs and burros for adoption at the Colorado State University Equine Center at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 24. These mustangs and burros have been selectively gathered from public lands administered by the BLM where the populations have exceeded the carrying capacity of the land.

Prior to the adoption, renowned mustang and burro trainers, including Steve Mantle and staff from the Colorado Wild Horse Inmate Program, will work with adopted mustangs and burros and offer training tips to prospective adopters from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. on June 23 and 8:00 – 11:00 a.m. on June 24.

Included in the adoption will be ten halter-trained mustangs that have been trained, and are well-started to begin saddle training. All of these animals are certified healthy and will be ready for adopters to gentle and train. They have been wormed, vaccinated (including West Nile), and come with a complete set of health care records. Most animals offered for adoption are under five years old.

Adoption registration will be from 2:00 -7:00 p.m. on June 23 and 8:00 a.m. - noon on June 24, with bidding beginning at 1:00 p.m. After bidding ends, any remaining mustangs and burros will be available for adoption on a first-come, first-served basis.

To qualify to adopt a BLM mustang or burro, adopters must be at least 18 years old and have the ability and financial means to care for a mustang or burro. Adopters must also have corrals that meet BLM specifications.
Mustangs and burros are well known for their inherent traits of intelligence, loyalty, stamina, sure-footedness, and soundness. For nearly 35 years, adopted mustangs and burros have found their way into the hearts of thousands of recreational riders and show arenas in both Western and English specialties, dressage competition, endurance rides as well as ranch work.

Go to www.cijvp.com for a schedule of events, adoption applications, and photos of some of the mustangs and burros offered for adoption. Applications for adoption are also available at the Canon City BLM Field Office (719.269.8539) or at any BLM office.
