Thank You to Anasazi Heritage Center Volunteers

The Anasazi Heritage Center hosted a recognition ceremony for its volunteers on Sunday, November 20th. Volunteers and staff came together to recognize those who donated their time over the last year. Each volunteer received an official certificate from the Bureau of Land Management recognizing the number of hours they contributed. Those with 150 hours or more received a gift bag of items from the museum’s bookstore.

This year, Dolores resident Loava Goodall was awarded with a Take Pride in America Certificate of Appreciation for volunteering over 2,000 hours. Loava has worked at the museum’s front desk since 1996. Every week Loava, very loyally, volunteers her time to provide much needed help greeting visitors, providing information about the area, and giving directions to destinations in Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.

In fiscal year 2005, 82 volunteers donated a total of 7,432 hours in various areas of the museum. Anasazi Heritage Center volunteers enjoy being part of a team of made up of other people from the area. Benefits include annual field trips, meeting new people, and attending special events on topics of natural and cultural history.

The Heritage Center’s volunteers provide visitor information, work with school groups, develop and present public programs, assist in the museum bookstore, catalogue artifacts into the museum’s database, and help with various tasks associated with maintaining the facility and grounds.

The Anasazi Heritage Center is located 3 miles west of Dolores. The Center is a museum for interpreting the history and culture of the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, Trail of the Ancients, and the Four Corners region. The Center’s films, exhibits, and educational programs explore archaeology, local history, and Native American lifeways. The museum currently houses over three million artifacts and includes a hands-on Discovery Area, permanent exhibits, and numerous changing special exhibits.

Thanks to our new and continuing volunteers for their service and time spent supporting the Center! If you are interested in volunteering at the Anasazi Heritage Center please contact Marissa Karchut at 882-5621.
