Temporary closure implemented in North Fruita Desert
GRAND JUNCTION, CO – The Bureau of Land Management Grand Junction Field Office has temporarily closed the North Fruita Desert mountain bike emphasis area to all camping and motor vehicle use. Concerns for public safety during construction of a new camping facility have prompted the closure. Mechanized and foot trail use on designated trails remains available in the mountain bike emphasis area, but trail users must access the trail system from the existing developed trailhead. The closure is in effect until November 21.
“During the closure, other camping opportunities are available in the North Fruita Desert outside of the mountain bike emphasis area and south of the kiosk staging area,” Recreation Program Manager Britta Laub said. “Visitors might also want to consider BLM recreation opportunities in Mack Ridge, Rabbit Valley and Bangs Canyon during construction.” Camping opportunities are also available nearby at the Highline Lake and Colorado River State Parks.
43 CFR 9268.3(d) Operations-Closures (1) Closure of Lands provides for this temporary closure. Those choosing to violate the closure order could face up to $1,000 in fines or imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both. Contractor and BLM employees working in their official capacity are exempt from the closure. For additional information, contact Recreation Program Manager Britta Laub at (970) 244-3031.
