Heritage Center Hosts New Exhibit and Public LectureOn Sunday, May 15, the Anasazi Heritage Center is celebrating the opening of its new exhibit on the Lowry Pueblo murals with a public reception and lecture. To mark the event, admission to the museum will be FREE all day. The reception will be held from 1pm to 2pm and is hosted by the San Juan Mountain Association. Beginning at 2pm archaeologists Sally Cole and Carole Graham will join Laguna Pueblo elders Victor and Elaine Sarracino for a discussion of the Ancient Images and Pueblo Perspective project. The project was a joint effort between Crow Canyon Archaeological Center and the Bureau of Land Management Anasazi Heritage Center and funded through the Colorado Historical Society State Historic Fund. The project centered on archaeological documentation and consultation with modern Pueblo people about the images from Lowry Pueblo and Painted Hand Pueblo –two sites within Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Products of the project include the new Lowry murals exhibit and a site brochure for Painted Hand Pueblo. This event is being held as a part of Colorado Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month. The Anasazi Heritage Center is open daily from 9am to 5pm. The museum is located 3 miles west of Dolores, Colorado. The museum also serves as the visitor information center for Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. A $3 admission fee is charged for adults, 17 and under and Golden Pass holders are free. Special events are made possible through visitor donations and entry fees under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act. For more information, call the Center at (970) 882-5600 or visit the Center’s web site at www.co.blm.gov/ahc.
