Implementation begins on North Fruita Desert Plan

GRAND JUNCTION—Just north of Fruita, over 72,000 acres of public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management offers what some feel are the country’s best single-track mountain bike trails, motorcycle and horseback riding opportunities. With the area’s management plan finalized in November 2004, implementation of the plan begins this week.

“BLM is installing fencing along 18 Road and around the OHV open area,” Supervisory Outdoor Recreation Planner Britta Laub said. “Increased BLM visitor service patrols, which help educate users about new rules for the area, have already begun.”

Entry signs are going up to welcome the more than 50,000 visitors expected to enjoy the North Fruita Desert this year. Throughout the summer, visitors will see all designated routes signed and a 35-unit campground constructed.
