BLM Temporarily Closes The Ledges

MONTROSE The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is temporarily closing approximately 5 acres of BLM land within the San Miguel River corridor known as the The Ledges, during construction of the new Ledges Recreation Area.  BLM engineers and the project contractor have requested a 2-month closure beginning June 13, 2005 to ensure public safety during construction efforts.

The closure restricts all public use, including, but not limited to, vehicle operation, day use, fishing, boating, camping, recreational mining and sightseeing. Currently, the anticipated end date for construction is August 2005. The Ledges is located immediately upstream of the Pinon Bridge on Hwy 90.  The Ledges Recreation Area will include two separate sites.  Construction at each site includes building recreational vehicle and tent campsites, picnic tables and grills, restrooms, graveled boat ramps, and information kiosks.  Recreation sites were based on the fact that they were on already disturbed areas, heavily impacted from past and current uses. The BLM manages approximately 38,000 acres within the San Miguel River corridor from Deep Creek to Pinon Bridge, near Nucla, as the San Miguel Special Recreation Management Area.

Maps of the closure area can be obtained from the Uncompahgre Field Office, 2505 South Townsend Avenue, Montrose, CO.  For information call Julie Stotler, Recreation Planner, at 970-240-5310.
