BLM partners to install trail signs
GRAND JUNCTION, CO – The Bureau of Land Management Grand Junction Field Office is partnering with community volunteers to install trail signs in the North Fruita Desert on October 22-23. An interagency off-highway vehicle (OHV) team, funded by the Colorado State Parks and composed of seasonal employees from the Grand Lake District of the Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forests, will be assisting with the project. This project completes the installation of about 300 travel management signs and information kiosks, part of BLM’s efforts to implement the recently finalized North Fruita Desert management plan.
“Regardless of your recreational interests, you’re invited to join in the signing effort,” said BLM Transportation Planner Jim Cooper. “It’s a great way to meet new friends and enjoy beautiful public lands right in your own backyard.”
Additional volunteers are sought to participate in the signing project and asked to meet at 9 a.m. each day at the trailhead located about 4 miles north of the canal on 18 Road. Bring plenty of water, work gloves, a hat and sunscreen.
The North Fruita Desert sees a diverse mix of uses. A popular destination for all trail enthusiasts, the area features a bicycle emphasis area, a multi-use trail system, a horse-foot emphasis area and an OHV area designated for open/cross country travel. An active coal mining operation and several natural gas wells can also be found in the North Fruita Desert vicinity. Other actions slated for the area include campground development, rerouting of trails and an adopt-a-trail program.
