Archaeology Education Workshop at the Anasazi Heritage Center

Are you interested in teaching archaeology in the classroom, with a group of children, or while leading a group to a museum? The Bureau of Land Management Anasazi Heritage Center and the national BLM Imagination Team staffs are pleased to announce a Project Archaeology education workshop to be held June 9-10 at the Anasazi Heritage Center in Dolores, Colorado.

Project Archaeology presents 28 lessons that can be used in the classroom or in almost any learning environment. The interdisciplinary lessons teach science, math history, language arts, and higher level thinking skills such as problem solving, synthesis, and evaluation. Additionally, they provide means to increase environmental awareness, stewardship values, and multicultural appreciation. An archaeologist will give an overview of the area and conduct a special site tour in the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.

The class cost is $35 for materials. Adams State College credit is available for an additional $45. Participants will receive curriculum books: Intrigue of the Past: A Teacher’s Activity Guide for Fourth through Seventh Grades and Intrigue of the Past: Discovering Archaeology in Colorado.

Museum educators, scoutmasters, 4-H leaders, and teachers of all subject areas are invited to attend one or both workshops. For more information or to register for the class, call Derrick Baldwin or Megg Heath at the Anasazi Heritage Center, (970) 882-5600.  Class size is limited. Registration and fees are due by June 6.

The Anasazi Heritage Center is a Bureau of Land Management museum with exhibits on archaeology, history, and Native American cultures of the Four Corners region. The Center is located 3 miles west of Dolores at 27501 Highway 184 and is open seven days a week. The AHC is also the headquarters for Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. For latest information, call (970) 882-5600.
