Currents at Escalante Potholes remain dangerousMONTROSE, CO—With summer temperatures reaching triple digits, many are tempted to cool off in the local swimming hole. The Bureau of Land Management Uncompahgre Field Office and Delta County Sheriff’s Office want to remind the public that, while this spring’s high water flows are beginning to subside, year-round currents found in the popular potholes formation on Escalante Creek can still catch and keep you underwater. The Escalante Potholes are located in the Escalante Potholes Recreation Area located roughly 12 miles up Escalante Canyon in remote southwestern Delta County. “The public’s safety is always a priority with the BLM,” said Uncompahgre Field Manager Barb Sharrow. “Jumping or diving into the potholes has claimed several lives. Not only is that moment’s thrill just not worth the risk, but new BLM regulations make it illegal.” The BLM implemented several new recreation rules this spring in an effort to saves lives and reduce resource damage occurring in the heavily used area. In the past, visitors would dive and jump from heights of 15 to 60 ft. off surrounding cliffs into the Escalante Potholes, which has resulted in numerous accidents and at least 5 deaths over the last 12 years. The Delta County Sheriff’s Office is working closely with the BLM and increasing patrols to enforce compliance, particularly with regard to the use of alcohol, in the area. The BLM is issuing citations to those violating the regulations. For additional information, contact Barb Sharrow at (970) 240-5300. ### |
