High runoff forces BLM to close Redlands Takeout

GRAND JUNCTION – Effectively immediately, the Redlands River takeout is closed to the public.  The access point currently is under water and not accessible due to higher than normal spring runoff on the Colorado River.  The takeout will remain closed until river levels subside.

Elevated snow packs and warming summer temperatures are causing many streams to experience higher than normal water flows.  “The public needs to exercise good judgment in determining whether or not to cross drainages,” said Raul Morales, Associate Field Manager for the BLM’s Grand Junction Field Office.  Streams that flow continuously, as well as intermittent tributaries are being affected.

Until river levels subside, river users are asked to exert caution when using recreational river sites. Users should be mindful of the following when recreating in or near the river:

  • know your physical capabilities
  • runoff water is extremely cold
  • runoff water typically contains floating debris
  • water levels hide hazards such as trees, rocks, etc.
  • water levels tend to be lower in the morning than in the afternoon when temperatures warm up and flow increases
  • traditional river campsites may be flooded during high water levels
  • during runoff, rivers are at flood stage
  • rivers change with different water levels, both in hydraulics and the location of takeout points
  • users should use their best judgment on using rivers
  • users can obtain more specific information at: http://water.usgs.gov/cgi-bin/waterwatch?map_type=real&state=co

In a continued effort to provide safe summer recreational opportunities for public lands users, the BLM recently enacted new rules prohibiting jumping and diving at the Escalante Potholes Recreation Area.  Additionally, the Delta County Sheriff’s Office works closely with the BLM to help enforce compliance, particularly with regard to the use of alcohol, in the area.

Further questions regarding river levels, can be directed to the BLM Grand Junction Field Office at 970-244-3000.
