BLM Uncompahgre OHV crew gears up for busy season

MONTROSE— The Uncompahgre Off-Highway Vehicle work crew is gearing up for a busy season. Five seasonal employees make up the crew, responsible for maintaining and improving trails in the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area and Bureau of Land Management lands in the Uncompahgre area.

The crew is funded with a $50,000 grant from the Colorado State Parks Off-Highway Vehicle Program, as well as $50,000 in BLM funds. The Crews main responsibilities are maintaining and signing trails, rehabbing impacted areas, improving drainage, coordinating volunteer projects and development of stewardship-based curriculum and "living classroom" projects with local schools, Montrose police DARE officers, OHV groups, and other interested partners.

Upcoming events planned by the crew include a May 19 and 21 clean up on Kinikin Road and Bostwick Park Road with local school groups. A community clean up of the Flat Top area in the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area is scheduled for June 6. The project is done in cooperation with the Motorcycle Trail Riders Assoc. and the Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Assoc.

For information on these or other activities of the OHV crew this summer, contact Clyde Waller at 240-5321, or email Waller at adobetrails@aol.com.
