ANASAZI HERITAGE CENTER BEGINS SUMMER HOURS

The Anasazi Heritage Center has begun its summer schedule and lengthened its hours of operation. Between March 1 and October 31, the museum will be open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

During the March - October season, the museum charges an entrance fee of $3 per adult. Children under 18 and scheduled educational groups always enter free. The museum honors federal Golden Eagle, Golden Age, and Golden Access Passes, and offers an annual museum pass for $6 per individual. All of these passes are available at the museum. No entry fee is charged during the off-season.

In addition to permanent exhibits on archaeology, regional history, and Native American cultures, two special exhibits will continue through April 27. The Four Corners Photographic Society has created an exhibit on local World Heritage sites Chaco Canyon, Aztec Ruins, and Mesa Verde. The Museum of New Mexico has loaned a collection of photographs by early modernist photographer John Candelario.

Scheduled lectures include a presentation on Utah’s Grand Gulch by former backcountry ranger and criminal investigator Lynn Schalk on Sunday, March 7, at 1:00 p.m. On Sunday, April 25 at 1:00 p.m., scholar Don Scheese will talk about “The Allure of the Anasazi,” a survey of how writers and artists interpret the ancient Southwest. Site tours and other special programs will take place throughout the summer.

Beginning May 10, the museum’s Special Exhibit Gallery will host another pair of exhibits. “Mindscapes” is a collection of aerial photography by Adriel Heisey, whose work has been featured on the cover of National Geographic Magazine. “Sand Island: Time Etched in Stone” explores the Sand Island petroglyph site west of Bluff, Utah.

The Anasazi Heritage Center is operated by the Bureau of Land Management to curate and display archaeological materials from public lands. It also the contact station for visitors to Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Events and exhibits are made possible by the Recreation Fee Demonstration Program.
