Bureau of Land Management Sponsors "Butch Cassidy Day"

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) National Heritage Education Program invites adults and children of all ages to a special event in Telluride, Colorado.  The event marks the official launch of BLM’s latest children’s publication series, called “History Mysteries.”  The first edition in the series focuses on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.  Butch Cassidy’s first bank robbery took place in Telluride in 1889.

“Butch Cassidy Day” will occur on Saturday, October 11, 2003.  It is jointly sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management, the Telluride Historical Museum, and the Sheridan Arts Foundation. At 3:00pm at the Sheridan Opera House (110 N. Oak), there will be a free showing of the 1969 classic movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford.  It will be followed at 5:00pm by a free showing of the 1979 prequel, “Butch and Sundance:  The Early Days,” starring William Katt and Tom Berenger.  Parts of the both movies were filmed in southwestern Colorado.

Kids who come in costume will receive a free pass to the Telluride Historical Museum!  Copies of the Butch Cassidy History Mystery and trading cards will be given to attendees.

Not only are the Butch Cassidy Day activities free and loaded with fun, they provide opportunities for adults and kids to increase historical awareness.  BLM law enforcement rangers will be on-hand to discuss crime prevention.
