BLM releases North Fruita Desert Plan

GRAND JUNCTION, CO – The Bureau of Land Management released the draft management plan and Environmental Assessment (EA) for the North Fruita Desert on Sept. 30, 2003. The plan focuses on managing the intensive growth in recreation in the area, which has accompanied the increase in population in the Grand Valley and Western Colorado.

The North Fruita Desert, 72,656 acres west of Grand Junction and north of Fruita, is a popular motorized and mountain bike recreation area. The draft plan creates a 4,000-acre mountain bike emphasis area with 35 miles of routes.

"The BLM recognizes the importance of mountain biking for the local community, both for recreation and as a significant economic activity," Grand Junction Area Assoc. Field Manager Raul Morales said. "This plan will help us manage that activity to ensure a sustainable, quality experience for people for years to come."

The draft plan also outlines a multiple use trail system that features many loop routes. Trails will be routed to protect and enhance recreation and natural resources in the area.

"The popularity of this area has tempted some to create and promote unauthorized trails. This planning process will allow us to determine appropriate routes and sustainable, long-term recreation opportunities so the people of the Grand Valley as well as tourists can enjoy the North Fruita Desert for years to come," Morales said.

Other highlights of the draft plan include improved access to Highline Lake State Park, a 3,000-acre equestrian and pedestrian area, travel management in Lippan Wash, a campground on 18 Road, visitor information signs and kiosks and revision of permit processing and procedures.

The plan was mailed today to participants in the planning process, which has been underway since 2000. Copies are also available at the BLM Grand Junction Field Office, and will be available online at

www.co.blm.gov/gjra/gjra.html on Oct. 1, 2003.
