FIRE RESTRICTIONS LIFTED ON SAN JUAN PUBLIC LANDS

As of Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, fire restrictions have been completely lifted on San Juan National Forest and San Juan Field Office-Bureau of Land Management lands in southwestern Colorado. Recent rains, cooler temperatures, and higher humidities have led to a decrease in the fire danger. However, visitors to the backcountry are cautioned to use fire with caution. The following safety tips are encouraged:

Always put out campfires completely every time you leave camp. Pour water on the ashes and stir until there is no smoke and ashes are cool to the touch.

Do not throw cigarette butts outside.

Make sure chainsaws have working spark arresters, and carry water, a shovel and fire extinguisher when collecting firewood.
