BLM GATHERING PICEANCE-EAST DOUGLAS WILD HORSES FOR ADOPTION SEPTEMBER 7
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is gathering wild horses from the Piceance-East Douglas Wild Horse Management Area. BLM will offer 40 wild horses under six years of age for adoption at the Yellow Creek Corrals near Meeker on Saturday morning, September 7, 2002, between 8:00-10:00 a.m.
The horses will be offered through a silent auction, with animals going to the highest bidder. Minimum bids for wild horses, which includes weanling foals, yearlings, mares, and studs, is $125.
On Saturday morning, potential bidders and the general public must register between 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. Bidding will take place from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. At 10:0 a.m., all bids become final. At registration, bidders will receive a bidder card with their own identification number. Bid sheets will be posted for each animal on their respective pens.
Applications for adoption will be accepted until 9:30 a.m. September 7. Potential adopters are encouraged to be pre-approved through the Canon City office. Potential adopters must:
- be at least 18 years of age (parents can adopt for children);
- have at least 400 square feet of corral space per horse with a fence at least six feet high (five feet high for animals under 18 months of age) made of poles, pipes or planks;
- have a two-sided shelter with a roof available for the animal;
- have no convictions of inhumane treatment to animals;
- agree to the terms of the private maintenance and care agreement;
- have a sturdy, covered 4-horse or larger trailer without drop gates to transport the animals home.
Directions to BLM’s Yellow Creek Corrals: From Meeker, go about two miles south on State Highway 13 to State Highway 64. Turn west and continue 17.6 miles to Rio Blanco County (RBC) Road #5 (also known as Piceance Creek Road). Turn south and go 4.7 miles to RBC Road #20 (also known as Yellow Creek/Duck Creek Road). Turn west on RBC #20 and go 2.7 miles to a 4-way intersection. Veer left at the intersection, staying on RBC #20, and travel 2.2 miles to the corrals.
