BLM TO HOLD WILD HORSE ADOPTION IN GREELEY

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will hold a competitive silent bid adoption in Greeley on Saturday, May 19. From 50-60 horses and burros will be offered for adoption at Producers Livestock on Stockyard Road, off Highway 85 Bypass.

The horses were gathered from Nevada and Wyoming, and the burros are from California and Arizona. Horses and burros will be offered starting at a minimum of $125. Adopters are required to take good care of the animal for at least one year before being eligible for title. During that time, the horses and burros are protected from sale, slaughter, or commercial exploitation. Other restrictions apply.

An open house will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, May 18. During this time, prospective adopters may view the animals and watch one of the free training demonstrations. The adoption is from 8:00-10:30 a.m. on May 19.

Applications for adoption are available from any BLM office but must be received and approved by noon on May 16 at the Cañon City Office. Applications received after this date and time must be accompanied by a veterinary certification of the facilities and will be accepted until 10:00 a.m. the day of the adoption.

Potential adopters must:

- be at least 18 years of age (parents can adopt for children);

- have at least 400 square feet of corral space per animal with a fence at least 6 feet high (5 feet for horses under 18 months of age and 4 ½ feet for burros) made of poles, pipe, or planks;

- have shelter available for the animal;

- have no convictions of inhumane treatment to animals;

- agree to the terms of the Private Maintenance and Care Agreement;

- and have a sturdy, covered 4-horse or larger trailer without drop gates to transport the animals to your home.

For specific information on this adoption or to request required forms, contact BLM in Cañon City at 719.269.8539.
