Lands with Wilderness Characteristics
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is required to maintain inventories of Lands with Wilderness Characteristics (LWC). An inventory of wilderness resources on BLM-administered public lands is an important part of our management. The wilderness characteristics inventory is required to be brought up to date whenever the BLM is undertaking a land use planning effort or revision of land use plans. The Lands with Wilderness Characteristics Inventory (LWCI) is being reviewed and updated as a component of the data used in the Desert Renewable Energy and Conservation Plan (DRECP) and Western Mojave (WEMO) Route Network and Plan Amendment.
The BLM conducts the inventory process using the criteria from Section 2(c) of the Wilderness Act to determine the presence of wilderness characteristics, such as:

These Inventory Reports are not yet compliant with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. These documents will be made 508 compliant as soon as possible.
