Fast Facts

  • The Imperial Valley Solar Project (IVSP), proposed by Tessera Solar of Texas, will be located 14 miles west of El Centro and four miles east of Ocotillo Wells in Imperial County.
  • The selected alternative, analyzed in the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS), authorizes a 709-megawatt solar power project.
  • The project will generate enough green energy to power approximately 212,700-531,750 homes.
  • The IVSP will utilize SES's SunCatcher solar dish technology, and when fully built will consist of 28,360 solar dishes.
  • The selected alternative's project footprint covers 6,359.56 acres of BLM public land.
  • The IVSP will include the construction of a new 230-kilovolt substation and other structures.  
  • Power generated will be delivered initially through the existing 200-kilovolt SDG&E Southwest Powerlink transmission line and later through the new 500-kilovolt Sunrise Powerlink transmission line.
  • The project is expected to generate 674 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase and 241 jobs during the operations phase.
  • Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar approved the Imperial Valley Solar Project on October 5, 2010.
