Walloupa Hydraulic Mine - Abandoned Mine Lands Project

Walloupa Hydraulic Mine entrance
View of the outlet portion of the Walloupa East 1 sluicebox tunnel draining the eastern portion of the Walloupa Hydraulic Mines. The + 400 foot tunnel represents a physical hazard and safety concern to the general public, due to its location within a high-use recreational area. Significant concentrations of elemental mercury are known to have accumulated in the residual sediments on the floor of the tunnel and elevated levels of methyl mercury have been measured in the water discharge from it.
