Vermont Mine - Abandoned Mine Lands Project

Site Narrative

The Vermont Mine is situated in the Deadwood Mining District near the divide that separates Shasta and Trinity counties. According to historical records the mine was probably located prior 1880 and by 1883 contained a 300-foot adit,  plans for a Huntington Mill, an amalgamation plate and Wilfley table. Site inspection in June, 2000 located at least six adits and a collapsed structure on the property.   Because of the site is reasonably accessible via 2WD road the primary concern is human safety.

Previous/Existing Assessments

The locations and condition of all mine features were compiled in June, 2000. Initial measurements did not indicate a water quality issue but high flow water sampling of the mine effluent is anticipated in the spring of 2001.

Estimated Costs

Estimated Costs: No costs for remediation or removal actions have been estimated but the likely recommendation would be to close off the adit portals with gates or fill. If contaminated water is shown to be present from future sampling additional actions would be required.

Risks:  Water Quality, Physical Safety

Photo:  One of five open adits, and one caved adit at the site.  The area is reasonably accessible via 2WD vehicle, and, given the easy access to the mine workings, the site poses a significant safety issue.  Most of the adits were flooded with flowing water and were not further examined beyond the portal, but cans and other debris indicate recent human entry.  Sampling of the mine water at high flow is anticipated in the spring of 2001.
