Umberci Mine Site - Abandoned Mine Lands Project

Site Narrative

The Umberci Mine is situated about 40 miles SW of Las Vegas on two sides of a 4WD road adjacent and between the Stateline and Mesquite Wilderness Areas. The site contains numerous open, unfenced shafts and adits and extensive underground workings on multiple levels. Bats frequent the mine in large numbers but the presence of hibernating or maternal colonies is unknown.

Previous/Existing Assessments

The locations and condition of  mine features were compiled during a visit to the site in 2001 at the request of the Needles Field Office.

Reclamation/Recommendations

The area is considered medium to high-use based on it's proximity to two Wilderness Areas and easy access from Primm and Las Vegas, NV. Subsequent to bat studies by Field Office biologists and a thorough investigation of the extensive underground workings, the shafts should be either fenced or backfilled and the adit should be gated.

Estimated Costs

A plan to mitigate this site and other physical hazards has not yet been implemented but cost to backfill or fence the shafts and gate the adit are estimated at between $30,000 and $40,000. Demolition and removal of nearby abandoned structures would cost an additional $60,000.
