Research Mine - Abandoned Mine Lands Project

Site Narrative

The Research Mine is located near the headwaters of Dry Creek in the Mayacmas Mining District and has been idle since 194. Historical records document a 400-foot long adit and 500 plus feet of drifts and crosscuts with a small quantity of mercury produced.  The lower crosscut is seeping water into Dry Creek at less than 5 gpm.  Sampling at high flow in the spring of 2001 will provide additional data on water quality.

Previous/Existing Assessments

The locations and condition of  mine features were compiled in August, 2000. Water measurements did not indicate a water quality problem but future sampling at high water is pending.

Estimated Costs

Soil, water and sediment samples were collected at the lower adit portal by USGS personnel in 2001. Estimated cost for sampling and analysis is about $1000. Additional sampling of Dry Creek sediments below the mine is anticipated for the fall of 2002.
