Site Narrative
The Kirkland shaft is situated in a rural area of west Mariposa County on an isolated piece of BLM land surrounded by private acreage. The shaft was determined to be about 90 feet deep and at the time of the visit had no suitable fencing and a dangerous sloping collar. Because of it's proximity to local residences and easy access to children it was considered an extreme safety issue.
Previous/Existing Assessments
The locations and condition of mine features were compiled during a site visit in December 34 2001 at the request of local residents and officials of Marioposa County.
Reclamation/Recommendations
Shortly after the initial site visit the shaft was temporarily fenced. In September the shaft was backfilled with existing mine waste and local loose material.
Costs
Total cost to backfill the shaft including the temporary fence was $5800. The CA DOC, Office of Mine Reclamation (OMR) provided $900 for bulldozer work and the BLM funded the remainder which included numerous site visits, planning and supervision.
