Grizzly Hill - Abandoned Mine Lands Project

Grizzly Hill Sluicebox tunnel outlet portal
The sluice tunnel outlet portal area represents a physical safety concern within the South Yuba Campground and South Yuba Primitive Area; a high-level use campground and recreational area. Significant concentrations of elemental mercury have likely accumulated in the residual sediments that have accumulated on the tunnel floor. Skin contact with mine discharge water represents a human health concern, where recreational miners access and stir up sediments within the sluice tunnel to extract small amounts of placer gold.
