Site Narrative

The "Goose Lake" mine is located within 1000 feet of US Highway 395 in a narrow ravine that drains into Goose Lake. Site features include a short adit, a small production pit, a two-pipe retort and a small amount of mercury retort tailings. The site is also located within 400 feet of a proposed viewpoint area to be constructed on BLM land. The primary concern is content of mercury in the tailings and surrounding soils which may pose a health hazard to visitors at the proposed viewpoint.

Previous/Existing Assessments

The locations and condition of  mine features were compiled in July, 2001 at the request of the Alturas Field Office.

Reclamation/Recommendations

A sampling program is planned for 2002 to determine the mercury content of soils and tailings at the site. Costs for sampling and analysis are estimated at less than $2000.
